Finding a snake in your house is an emergency situation. Removing snakes from the home is extremely dangerous and should not be done on your own. Some snakes, such as the Western rattlesnake, are extremely venomous and a bite can be fatal. After finding a snake in the home, many people’s first instinct is to kill the snake. Truthfully, though, the vast majority of snakes in Idaho are harmless and they would typically rather flee than fight. If you have a snake in your home, yard, or business, our Nampa snake control professionals can help you get rid of it safely and effectively.

Understanding Snakes

Snakes are a type of reptile and belong to the same classification of animals as turtles, lizards, and crocodiles. All reptiles have scales on their body that periodically shed. Unlike mammals, such as humans, snakes cannot regulate their own body heat and so, they rely on their environment to do it for them. Unfortunately, many snakes find the extreme weather in Idaho uncomfortable, particularly when it becomes very hot or cold. To not only be more comfortable, but also to help them survive, snakes will find their way into homes, basements, and garages.

Nampa Pest Control Manangement

Snakes do not have any ears, legs, or eyelids. They also have just one lung. Of course, most people recognize snakes by their slender and long bodies. It is this shape that allows snakes to swim, climb, and move into the smallest of areas in a home. Even though these animals do not have ears, they can discern low-frequency vibrations from the ground and air. While snakes do not have eyelids, they do have a scale that is clear and that covers each eye. When snakes shed this scale, the eye clouds over for a short period of time. This has led to the misconception that snakes go temporarily blind during different times of the year.

Common Snakes in Nampa

The most common snakes in Nampa are as follows:

  • Garter snakes
  • Gopher snake (bullsnake)
  • Western rattlesnake

What to Do After a Snake Bite

Snake bites are painful and in certain cases, such as after being bitten by a rattlesnake, they can be fatal. If you are bitten, the only thing you should do is get to a hospital as soon as possible. Many hospitals and medical centers have antivenom which can be administered to reduce the harm caused by a snake bite.

Do not try to remove the venom yourself or have someone try to remove it for you. Movies and television shows often depict someone making an incision after a snake bite, so they can suck the venom out. This is not an effective treatment and could cause further damage to the body.

Why Do Snakes Enter Homes?

Again, one of the main reasons snakes enter homes is because they are looking for a reprieve from either very hot or very cold weather. However, they may also enter your home looking for food. Snakes mainly eat small rodents such as mice, gophers, and in some instances insects.  As such, if you have a snake in your home, it could mean that you are also dealing with another type of pest, as well.

Nampa snake control expert can inspect the entire property and eliminate all pests, including the snake as well as any pests they are using as a food source.

To prevent snakes from entering your home, it is important to seal off any access points, such as gaps or cracks around doorways, windows, and other areas. If you have grass in your yard, you may also want to consider replacing it with gravel, particularly if snakes are a regular problem around your home. Snakes cannot move across gravel as easily as they move through grass. Also keep bushes and trees trimmed, as snakes can use these areas to hide and seek shelter. Installing snake-proof fencing can also help keep snakes at bay.
